World Conference on the Development of Cities, Porto Alegre, 13-16 February 2008 13-02-2008 Introduction The World Conference on the Development of Cities that will take place
in Porto Alegre in February 2008 has the main purpose of gathering the diversity
of democratic innovation and initiatives for the social change, which have been
emerging in the last years, creating a collective thinking environment in order
to discuss and present experiences, and allowing to approaching city development
issues, such as a more organic and systemic development of the cities
Description
The World Conference on the Development of Cities has the main purpose of
gathering the diversity of democratic innovation and initiatives for the social
change, which have been emerging in the last years, creating a collective
thinking environment in order to discuss and present experiences, and allowing
to approaching city development issues, such as a more organic and systemic
development of the cities, and focusing four main subject matters:
1) The Right to the City (Local Policies on the Citizens Rights and
Responsibilities)
2) Governance and Democracy in Cities (Innovative Management and Democratic Participation Experiences) 3) Local Development in Cities 4) Sustainability and Network-City. These broad subjects will develop into associated subjects, involving, among
others, issues such as gender, poverty, youth, immigration, informal labor,
environment and violence.
The event is addressed to public managers (city mayors, aldermen, and
operators of public policies), university students and specialists, community,
business and social leaderships of the democratic participation, focused on
urban territorialities and turned to the initiation of a local development in
the cities.
