Forum of the World Alliance of Cities Against Poverty – Athens, 26-28 March 2008 26-03-2008 Introduction The World Alliance of Cities against Poverty (WACAP) unites cities that have
decided to take a public stand and mobilise all sectors of society, from
individuals to governments, to do everything in their power to eliminate poverty
both at home and abroad. The Athens’ Forum is themed ‘local democracy to fight
poverty’.
Description
The World Alliance is a contribution made by cities from all continents to
the International Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (1997-2006) proclaimed
by the United Nations General Assembly. WACAP was initiated during the first
quarter of 1996, International Year for the Eradication of Poverty, and
officially launched on October 17, 1997 by the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP).
