Noise in the city - Amsterdam, 14 March 2008 14-03-2008 Introduction Nowadays, almost 25% of the European citizens are affected by noise caused by
various sources like traffic, railways, airports, enterprises or other sorts of
noise sources like neighbour noise and construction noise. Most of these people
- approximately 75-80% - are living in cities. Due to the growth of traffic all
over Europe, the noise will also increase if noise measures remain undone.
Description
Cities within agglomerations are legally bound by the Environmental Noise
Directive 2002/49/EC to produce Noise Maps and Noise Action Plans. The
aforementioned percentages of people and the expected outcomes of the Noise Maps
may be a reason to take study into the detrimental effects of noise on human
well-being, (health), the unbeneficial effects on spatial planning, quality of
life and as well the possible solutions that can be taken to diminish the noise
and the unwanted noise effects. At the same time attention is needed for joint
approaches which are beneficial for other environmental issues like air quality.
It’s therefore that EUROCITIES takes up this responsibility and organizes
this conference in collaboration with other parties. By means of this congress
EUROCITIES will hand out information about noise and the latest insights about
the detrimental effects of noise and the available practical solutions (best
practices) to reduce noise in urban areas.
