Masterclass Skills & Capacity Building - Brussels, 19-20 March 2008 19-03-2008 Introduction ASC, Nicis Institute and EUKN organise a two-day master course for urban
professionals involved in the development or implementation of urban policies
and projects. The course will take place in Brussels from 19th to 20th March
2008 and will enable participants to develop concrete action plans to create
sustainable cities and communities. Participation is free of charge, but
registration is necessary. Upon registration, participants will receive all
logistical details.
Description
The master class will use the IMAGINE methodology to guide participants
through five “events” that focus on either real communities in which
participants have direct involvement or case study-based scenarios where
participants adopt roles of people involved in creating better places. The aim
of the master class is to give participants a wider understanding of what
sustainable urban communities can and should be and to develop generic skills
for knowing and understanding what constitutes such a community.
The application deadline for the Masterclass 'Skills & Capacity
Building' has closed.
Programme
The two-day course will be given by Dr. Simon Bell from the Bayswater
Institute in London and Prof. Dr. Frank Hendriks from Tilburg University,
Netherlands. The course is designed to allow participants to explore issues
associated with sustainable urban development in the European context. Based on
the experiences brought to the table by the participating policy makers, the
master class will take the participants through four different stages:
reflection, connection, modelling and action planning.
Day 1: From Reflection to Modelling
The first day will focus on introducing the course and the methodology to
participants. A process of reflection will be used to begin to understand the
issues in communities and to start to establish indicators by which to assess
the health of such communities. Gaining insight into locally defined concerns
helps to understand the context of the master class. In the afternoon,
participants will begin to agree a set of sustainability indicators to establish
the common sustainable value. Building on these accomplishments, a diagrammatic
representation of the sustainability indicators is developed.
Day 2: Modelling, Action Planning and Beyond
The diagrammatic representation of the sustainability indicators will lead to
scenario making for reflection on the communities’ future evolutions. The
scenarios will be used to develop action plans to consider what needs to be done
next, who should be influenced and what needs to change. Once the action plans
are established, these can be taken home to market the insights obtained
throughout the course. The course will end with an exploration of front-line
professional skills and their relations with the back-offices of urban
governance.
