Urban Europe: Why Cities Matter - Brussels, 26 June 2008 26-06-2008 Introduction The majority of European citizens live in urban areas. They are key centres
of cultural and economic activity. Indeed, they are the motors of economic
growth, providing benefits of agglomeration for businesses, and attracting the
most dynamic companies and fastest growing industries. Cities are centres of
economic development, social activities and cultural vibrancy, but can at the
same time face concentrations of social, environmental and economic problems.
The conference outlines this ambiguous relation and focuses thereby on the role
of an active European policy in this field.
