Shaping the future of local services in Europe - Paris, 2-4 July 2008
02-07-2008

Introduction
The 16th European Social Services Conference will focus on the role of local services in the rapidly changing, often problematic and sometimes divided communities in which they work. It will explore the experiences of a number of European countries in this regard. The conference will look at a range of developments in service partnerships with other stakeholders, including users and local citizens, and will ask how local services can best respond to the social challenges of the 21st century.
Description
The main focus of the conference will be on the following themes:
  • Innovative local services and community networks (including informal care) for social support and care (e.g. children and young people, those with disabilities and older people)
  • Economic and social renewal/regeneration
  • Local employment initiatives/partnerships
  • Growth of ‘parallel communities’ (ethnic, cultural, gated communities, etc.)
  • Community safety, street crime, tackling anti-social behaviour
  • Changing role of schools and relationship to local communities
  • Improving access to local services
  • Development of local strategic action plans and community consultation
  • Rural communities and their challenges
