INTA World Urban Development Congress - Riga, 26-29 October 2008 26-10-2008, Source: http://www.inta32.org/ Introduction INTA, the International Urban Development Association, is holding its next
World Urban Development Congress in Riga, Latvia. The Congress will take
advantage of the booming expansion of Riga to address issues of governance of
large-scale development projects with particular attention to the different
modes of financing and the role of cultural projects in the public acceptance of
these large projects.
Description
Because the world is changing rapidly and is facing insistent climate,
energy, social and economic challenges, creativity and innovation are needed
more than ever. If people have to be more creative, so do place, cities and
territories, where now the majority of the world population is living.
After the INTA Congress in Belfast that anticipated on the conditions and
factors of change, the INTA32 Congress is one step further in providing policy
makers, urban actors, public and private entrepreneurs with information and
shared experiences, management tools and responses to these challenges.
INTA32 Congress is unique in addressing in a single exciting programme
priority policies issues and offering views on the management of today's most
significant factors that support urban and territorial development: creativity,
competitiveness and area development.
Today's cities have to attract people, attention and investment. However, a
creative city needs smart spatial development in terms of interactions with
landscape, places and people. Area development is the all encompassing process
integrating energy efficiency, transport and traffic, waste and landscape,
innovative forms of functional mix at the appropriate governance scale. Only
then cities and territories can reposition themselves in the world competition.
INTA32 Congress in Riga will help you to turn constraints into development
opportunities:
Globalisation and the shift towards a knowledge-based economy have important
effects on territorial competitiveness. Territorial projects foster new forms of
cooperation that bring public and private actors closer to each other. What are
the appropriate forms of territorial cooperation?
Large-scale cultural and creative projects play a crucial role in the
attractiveness of territories. Communities are focusing on the integration of
innovation, social entrepreneurship, culture, arts and business to make vibrant
environments. How do culture and economy connect? How do culture and social
cohesion connect? Which measures motivate cities to be creative?
The strategic management of territories is about the quality of public
governance, the capacity to formulate appropriate strategies as well as the
ability to offer innovative services to populations and economic partners.
