II International Conference of the TRACE network and Congress “The transformation of the European city. Guidelines for the 21st century”- Barakaldo (Bilbao, Spain), 27th & 28th November 2008
27-11-2008, Source: L’Hospitalet City Council - TRACE Executive Secretariat

Introduction
The Barakaldo City Council, as member of TRACE, will host the II International Conference of the network and will accompany the institutional event with the Congress: “The Transformation of the European City. Guidelines for the 21st Century”.
Description
In Europe, in its territories and, more concretely, in its cities, changes are taking place that generate new ways of living and also affect city councils and the policies that they develop. Around the largest European capitals and cities, are emerging intermediate cities that are generating strong transformations and that wish to make the importance of them clear. This transformation, which is not limited to the physical dimension, also includes social, economic, cultural and environmental aspects, enables that cities become more competitive and with more quality of life.
In this context emerged in 2007 the TRACE network, promoted by the Spanish city of l’Hospitalet, and conceived as an open space for debate and reflection; for sharing experiences and proposals on urban transformation topics, which have or will have the highest impact on the political and social life of these cities and their citizens.
The Barakaldo City Council, as member of TRACE, will organise the Second International Conference of TRACE and will accompany this institutional event with the Congress “The transformation of the European city. Guidelines for the 21st Century”, that will take place in Barakaldo next 27th & 28th November. The Congress will focus on the analysis of the European City, attempting to define new guidelines for the future rather than just looking into the past, and to reflect on the impact of the economic context in the transformation planning.
This conference foresees to meet politicians, urban planners, architects, researchers and other professionals related to the transformation processes of cities, and so to create a space for exchange of knowledge and experiences on these issues.
