Sustainable Cities and Regions: Enabling Vision or Empty Talk? - Örebro, 11-13 March 2009 11-03-2009, Source: Urbanicity.org Introduction A majority of the world's population lives in urban areas, a situation that
entails both expectations and strains. Cities are frequently depicted as sites
of economic growth and innovation, and their location in sub-national regions
has become an important dimension of sustainable economic development. Likewise,
the role of cities in times of globalization is frequently stressed.
Accordingly, in discussing sustainability and the highly topical issues of
climate change and biodiversity, we see an increased emphasis on urban and
regional governance, including issues such as the design and function of urban
areas, land use, energy efficiency, and social inclusion.
Description
There are, however, also processes of exclusion and social and economic
polarization as well as problems of environmental degradation. Thus, cities and
regions are sites of contradictory tendencies, in that they both compete and

divide. These circumstances put the focus on the complex relationship between
sustainability, efficiency, and democracy.
The aim of the conference is to focus the role of cities and
regions in discussions of sustainable development. What do the contradictory
trends in cities and regions imply? How are affiliation and alterity
constructed? What does the talk of the sustainable and liveable city or region
mean? Who represents whom and on what mandate in such discussions? At the
conference, these and related issues will be addressed in keynote presentations
and working groups organized around the following notions:
