23rd AESOP Congress: why can't the future be more like the past - Liverpool, 15-18 July 2009 15-07-2009, Source: Urbanicity.org Introduction In the autumn of 1909 the first five students joined the new Department of
Civic Design. One hundred years later, AESOP is delighted to be hosting the
annual AESOP (Association of European Schools of Planning) Congress. An
invitation is extended to colleagues from Europe, and beyond, to join AESOP in
what will be a major international congress to help celebrate its centenary.
Description
Chosen as European Capital of Culture in 2008, Liverpool has been the focus
of numerous regeneration initiatives. The city has and continues to change
dramatically, and is re-emerging as a renaissance city. For the city, 2008 marks
an important point in the journey, but the rebuilding of the city will continue
and 2009 is designated year of the environment in Liverpool. The Congress will
provide an excellent opportunity to see and reflect upon the substantial
progress that has been made in recent years, and indeed the legacy of 2008.
The conference theme enables us all to reflect upon and celebrate the history
of planning and planning education since the Department was founded. However,
the main focus is on how the lessons from the past can be used to deal with the
many challenges and opportunities facing planning and planners in the future.
The Congress will follow the well
established pattern of plenary sessions, parallel track sessions and mobile workshops. The mobile workshops offer the opportunity for delegates to experience first
hand some of the changes and challenges facing the city, including for example;
Merseyside Regional Waterfront Park; managing Liverpool’s World Heritage Site;
engaging local communities in environmental improvements; Groundwork Merseyside;
city centre redevelopments; Anfield regeneration; Housing Market Renewal
Initiative, etc.
