Economic development and transport: delivering during the recession, Birmingham, 8 July 2009 08-07-2009 Introduction The aim of this event is to explore the role that transport can play in
ensuring the economic, social and environmental development of cities. The
conference develops themes and policies initially discussed in the ‘On the Move'
report, which was launched in November 2008. The report argued that integrated
transport will play a key role in the economic recovery of our cities, alongside
other key policy areas. This conference will look at the wider development needs
of cities, including transport.
Description
Clive Dutton, Director of Planning and Regeneration, Birmingham City Council,
and a senior representative from ASDA Stores Limited have agreed to be the
keynote speakers for the session and will provide their thoughts and ideas about
transport's role in the future development of English cities.
The rest of the conference will see a number of themed breakout sessions
based around 1) new transport powers for cities, 2) the ins and outs of
development and transport planning, and 3) financing transport in a recession.
This will be an important opportunity to shape policy thinking on urban
transport - and to develop suggestions that could be taken up by the next
government.
