More European funding for international municipal cooperation
28-11-2005

The European Commission intends to launch a new development programme for the 2007-2013 period in which non-state actors like local authorities will be able to participate. The programme, called "Support to non-state actors in development", will follow on from two other programmes, one with a budget of €200 million exclusively for large non-governmental organisations and one of €6 million for small NGOs and local authorities.
If the proposals for the new programme get the go-ahead, it will represent an important victory for the lobby of local authority representatives in Europe and in developing countries. They are explicitly mentioned in addition to the non-governmental organisations. Over the coming months the stakeholders will be consulted about the details of the programme.
