Bristol Accord on Sustainable Communities 08-12-2005 EU ministers involved in Urban Policy agreed upon the common goal of creating
sustainable communities in Europe. This agreement was announced yesterday by the
British Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott at the EU Informal Meeting of
Ministers in Bristol. The Bristol Accord provides a new framework for EU
Governments to create jobs, economic prosperity, social justice, and improved
quality of life for all of Europe´s 450 million citizens.
A sustainable community is a community that is safe, fair, thriving,
environmentally sensitive, well run, served, connected and designed. Eight key
characteristics are set out to inform future European regional policy to deliver
places where people want to live and work, now and in the future. It builds on
the Rotterdam urban acquis, the Lisbon agenda for jobs and growth, the
Gothenburg Agenda for environmental sustainability and the goals of democratic
governance set at the Warsaw Summit last May.
The British Academy for Sustainable Communities will be looking at the common
challenges in building the skills capacity needed to create sustainable
communities in Europe. The Academy will be working together with Member States,
the European Urban Knowledge Network (EUKN) and URBACT.
