EUROCITIES members adopt Lyon Declaration 02-12-2005 From 19 to 22 November, more than 500 delegates from across Europe and around
the world, including 40 Mayors and other representatives from 150 cities in 50
different countries, gathered together in the French city of Lyon to participate
in the Annual Conference of EUROCITIES. The main theme of the Conference was "
European Cities Open Up to the World", focusing on the important role that
cities and local governments can play in the field of international cooperation.
During the final day of the Conference on 22 November, EUROCITIES members
unanimously approved the EUROCITIES Lyon Declaration. This Declaration sets out
the benefits of cities getting directly involved in international cooperation,
and the specific reasons why European cities should cooperate with cities in
different parts of the world. The Lyon Declaration also includes a series of
political and practical recommendations addressed to the institutions of the
European Union, and also to the national governments of the Member States.
