Austria takes up EU presidency
02-01-2006

As of 1 January 2006, Austria is the new president of the European Union. The EU presidency rotates every six months between the EU member states. Austria takes over from the United Kingdom. The next EU president will be Finland, as of 1 July 2006. On 18 January 2006, Austrian chancellor Wolfgang Schussel will unveil his country's main presidency goals.
Unlike the UK, both Austria and Finland are not expected to pursue a specific urban agenda during their presidencies. Vienna already sparked some controversy throughout Europe with its plan to revive the EU constitution after it was rejected by French and Dutch voters in 2005.
