Stockholm introduces congestion charge for motorists
05-01-2006

Starting from 3 January 2006 Swedish motorists have to pay a charge to take their vehicles into the centre of Stockholm on weekdays. A journey to the inner city of the Swedish capital costs between €1.00 and €2.00, depending on the time of day. Charging starts each weekday at 06:30 hrs and end at 18:30 hrs. There will be no charge for driving into the city in the evening and during the night and weekend.
The charge has been introduced mainly to relieve the chronic congestion on the roads into the city. Approximately one-fifth of commuters are expected to leave their cars at home and commute by bus or train from now on.
Referendum
The congestion charge is provisionally a trial that will last until July 31, 2006. On September 17 the 750,000 inhabitants of Stockholm will be able to vote in a referendum on whether to continue the charge. In recent opinion polls two-thirds of the city’s population said they were against the congestion charge.
More than 160 cameras automatically record every vehicle that drives into and out of the city centre. An important point for tourists is that all vehicles with a foreign registration plate are exempted from the congestion charge.
