28-02-2006

European Commission Vice-President Verheugen and Regional Policy Commissioner Hübner will join the Committee of the Regions (CoR) in a “territorial dialogue” with more than 100 representatives of local and regional authorities on 1 March 2006. The participants in the dialogue will be invited to back Result of the dialogue will be a political declaration to be sent to EU leaders ahead of the upcoming Spring Council. The declaration will call for a “true partnership” between all levels of government involved in delivering the Lisbon objectives.
The draft declaration, drawn up by the CoR's Commission for Economic and Social Policy (ECOS) and Commission for Territorial Cohesion Policy (COTER), underlines that local and regional authorities should be fully consulted in the preparation of National Reform Programmes (NRPs) by Member State governments. “ It is inconceivable to exclude local and regional authorities when setting out strategies for competitiveness, growth and employment,” said CoR President Michel Delebarre. “These authorities are in direct contact with the reality of economic development and social cohesion. They know what's happening on the ground and can provide a real added value to the development of policies that will actually deliver concrete results for our citizens.”
