Consultation on security in urban transport and rail
22-03-2006

The European Commission launched a public consultation on 17 March with particular bearing on rail and urban passenger transport security. The Commission aims to determine and implement a European framework for combating the terrorist threat in the transport sector. The public consultation will result in a official European Commission Communication, an official EU standpoint on the issue, later this year. The EU invites all interested parties to share their opinion. The consultation closes on 15 April 2006.
The Commission wants to achieve higher security in transport by putting into practice an information exchange mechanism, including exchange of experience and best practice, on issues relating to rail and urban transport security.
The aim of the consultation is to collect opinions as to the feasibility of ensuring real and effective cooperation on a European scale. It contains questions about the most appropriate form for the exchange of information (international conferences, seminars, working groups, twinning arrangements, etc.) and whether member states should be required to nominate someone to be responsible for gathering and disseminating this information.
