Urban air pollution problem not to be solved
27-03-2006

The European Environment Agency (EEA) published a report on 23 March 2006, that concludes that even in 2030, air pollution from traffic will still be a pressing problem for European cities. Currently, none of the researched cities meet the recommended air quality levels. For the 2030 air quality projection, the results imply these levels will be met in only very few cases. Fine particular matter, with traffic as its main source, is causing the most adverse health effects.
Human exposure to increased pollutant concentrations in densely populated urban areas is high. Air quality limit values, which are aimed at protecting public health, are frequently exceeded especially in streets and other urban hotspots. The report, 'Air pollution at street level in European cities' looks at traffic hotspots in European cities during 2000. The report also makes projections for air quality in 2030. This study of 20 European cities found air pollution above recommended levels in every one of them.
