Budget 2007: EP give priority to image-building and enlargement
23-03-2006

According to the European Parliament, the EU institutions have failed to convince European citizens that they truly represent their interests and aspirations. Improving existing information services, making them accessible to all citizens and, in the opiniom of the European Parliament, ensuring the success of enlargement should be the priorities for the EU institutions' 2007 budgets.
According to the European parliament, over the years the EU institutions have failed to convince European citizens that they truly represent their interests and aspirations. The EP remain committed to strengthening the image and credibility of the EU institutions. The parliament see themselves fitted for this task since they are the "only democratically elected representation of European population".
  • One way of improving the image of the EU institutions is to re-examine the spread and duplication of Parliamentary activities in three different locations. Currently, these activities take place in Brussels, Luxembourg and Strasbourg.
  • More and better media coverage of EP sessions is another proposed means of improving the EU image.
For the EP enlargement remains an important political priority. MEPs insist on the need to continue the efforts already undertaken in the different institutions with the aim of resolving all pending administrative questions before the end of 2006.
