Saxony gets the green light for urban pollution aid programme 09-03-2006 The European Commission has authorised the extension of Saxony’s programme
aimed at reducing urban pollution caused by exhaust gases from buses and by
greenhouse gas emissions. The Commission said on 8 March that the programme was
in line with EU guidelines on state aid for environmental protection. The
programme provides financial support for local authorities and businesses with
responsibility for public transport services.
Aim of the programme is to reduce emissions through the procurement of new,
more environmentally-efficient public transport vehicles and better traffic
management. The programme was first started in 2001. The government of Saxony
plans to spend 15.9 million on the programme between now and 2008.
According to Vice-President Jacques Barrot, the Commissioner with special
responsibility for transport: “The drive to improve mobility must go hand in
hand with efforts to encourage modes of transport which take greater account of
the environment and the quality of life. This is also true in the case of public
transport. Saxony’s efforts are therefore in keeping with the European
Commission’s objectives concerning the promotion of less polluting vehicles and
energy efficiency.”
