Urban forests in EU action plan
16-06-2006

The European Commission has adopted an 18-point EU Forest action plan on 15 June 2006. One of the four aims of the plan is to improve the quality of life of EU citizens. For this, focus is on environmental education and the role of urban and peri-urban forests. Another important issue in the action plan is the environmental protection and maintaining biodiversity.
According to Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner Mariann Fischer Boel the plan aims “to maintain and enhance the multifunctional role of European forests, underpinning better and sustained provision of goods and services to citizens”.
The plan has four goals:
  • to improve long-term competitiveness;
  • to improve and protect the environment;
  • to contribute to the quality of life;
  • to foster coordination and communication.
