Urban transport - a European priority 19-06-2006 The European Commission is due to adopt a White Paper on a common transport
policy on 22 June 2006. The White Paper sets the EU’s strategy on transport for
the years to come. Urban transport is identified as a priority. The Commission
wants to improve mobility on the one hand, and reduce the number of accidents
and pollution. The Commission seeks to achieve this by the development and
exchange of good practice and knowledge.
The general guideline in the European White Paper is to not aim for less
mobility, but for cleaner and safer transport. Vehicles need to become more
environmentally and energy efficient, safer and more effective.
In the field of urban transport, the Commission refrains from direct
measures, to take into account the principle of subsidiarity. The Commission is
soon to announce the publication of a Green Paper on urban transport. This
document will be up for discussion with all stakeholders and other interested
parties.
