European Mobility Week 2006 proved successful 26-09-2006 This year, over 1300 cities and towns were involved in the European Mobility
Week (EMW). The central theme for EMW 2006 was ‘Climate Change’. The success of
the initiative is amply demonstrated by the number of cities and towns involved.
This year, 1300 cities participated in the Week and in the international car
free day. This represents a 30% increase from last year, when 964 cities
participated in the EMW.
The European Mobility Week is a major awareness-raising campaign that aims to
promote sustainable mobility in urban areas, and to inform citizens about the
potential benefits of reducing the amount of motorised traffic for the local and
global environment, human health and quality of life. Aim of the EMW 2006 was to
raise awareness of the links between transport and climate change by both
citizens and policy makers and to inform individuals about the impact of their
personal transport choices upon climate change.
To participate in the European Mobility Week, local authorities were invited
to sign the European Mobility Week Charter and to implement a series of actions,
including the launch of at least one permanent measure to promote local
sustainable transport.
Local authorities that participated in the European Mobility Week 2006 are
strongly encouraged to apply for the European Mobility Week Award, rewarding the
cities with the most comprehensive and innovative Mobility Week programme.
Deadline for submitting applications is 16 October 2006. The registration form
