Participate in the Communication on culture
02-10-2006

The Directorate General for Education and Culture (DG EAC) is preparing a Communication on culture. The role of culture in European integration will be analysed. The Communication will take stock of existing efforts and identify new challenges and possible solutions for promoting culture. The aim is to compile a European ‘agenda’ for culture and to develop new methods for dialogue and cooperation.
The EU must bring itself closer to the citizen and that art and culture can make an important contribution. Culture lies at the heart of the European project and has a unique and indispensable role to play. In the past, the question was what Europe could do for culture. It is time to ask what culture can do for Europe.
The Communication will focus on two issues:
  • developing active European citizenship, respecting cultural diversity, promoting intercultural dialogue, while fostering a sense of “European identity” complementary to other identities;
  • the economic and social objectives of the Lisbon agenda, and the role of creativity in enhancing the competitive edge of Europe.
The Communication will be adopted by the Commission in the first quarter of 2007 and will launch a broad consultation with all interested parties, which is intended to stimulate the Commission’s future work. The deadline for contributions is 5 November 2006.
