Commission awards eleven civic projects "Golden Stars" 02-10-2006 Six town twinning schemes and five civil society projects have been awarded
“Golden Stars for Excellence in European Citizenship”. The Prizes were awarded
in Brussels on 28 September at the “Europe for the Citizens Forum” At this Forum
mayors and other representatives from towns and civic organisations from all
over Europe debated the problem of European citizens' civic participation.
Commissioners Ján Figel (Education, Training, Culture and Multilingualism)
and Margot Wallström (Institutional Relations and Communication Strategy) were
both present at the Forum. In there speeches they both emphasised the importance
of "gaining the confidence of citizens".
The awards for European Citizenship have been presented each year since 1994.
This year's winners include a town twinning scheme involving three university
theatres and a project involving two rural regions in Poland and Slovakia,
designed to help local social leaders conduct public debates on European issues.
