Study reveals London and Paris as key immigrant cities
31-01-2007

What are the world’s top immigrant destinations? Answering this question was central to a study conducted by researchers at the George Washington University in the United States. With the help of national censuses, they gathered and analysed data on the foreign born (people born outside the territorial state) in 150 urban areas across the globe.
The study reveals a top tier of twenty cities with more than one million foreign-born residents:
  • Asia: Hongkong and Singapore
  • Australia/Oceania: Melbourne and Sydney
  • Europe: London, Moscow and Paris
  • North America: Chicago, Dallas, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, San Francisco, Toronto and Washington D.C.
  • Middle East: Dubai, Mecca, Medina and Riyadh
The data show that one in five of the world’s immigrants chooses one of these twenty cities to work and/or live in. The selectivity of immigrants in their destinations underscores the significance of cities as locations that are disproportionately impacted by immigration. The top-20 of immigrant cities also demonstrates that immigration is not merely a Western, but a global phenomenon.
In the list of cities with at least 100,000 foreign born, North American and European metropolitan areas stand out: 30 European and 44 North American cities have over 100,000 immigrant residents. All West-European countries now have a least one major immigrant city.
