Call for projects to test the first-ever rating system for sustainable urban neighbourhood development 21-02-2007 At the beginning of February, the pilot version of the first-ever rating
system for sustainable urban neighbourhood development, LEED-ND, was released.
Through a multi-year research and review process, the US-based LEED-ND partners
have put together draft criteria to guide cities in improving environmental
sustainability. They are now seeking projects to participate in the pilot
programme.
The rating system is designed to certify exemplary development projects that
perform well in terms of smart growth, new urbanism and green building. Up to
120 projects will be selected to be part of the pilot programme. The objective
of the pilot is to improve the system and ensure that it is practical for
application.
Projects in all stages of development – from pre-entitlement planning to
complete construction – will be accepted into the pilot programme. They may
constitute whole neighbourhoods, fractions of neighbourhoods or multiple
neighbourhoods. The pilot programme focuses on testing the rating system in the
United States, but projects set outside the United Sates will also be accepted
on a limited basis. Deadline for the expression of interest is 6 April 2007.
LEED-ND is a joint venture of the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU), the
United States’ Green Building Council and the Natural Resources Defense Council.
