Italian and Swiss regions join forces to reduce air pollution
12-02-2007

Five Northern-Italian regions and one Swiss canton bordering Northern Italy have signed a common anti-air pollution strategy. The pact formalises the cooperation between Lombardy, Piedmont, Veneto, Trentino, Bolzano (Italy) and Tessin (Switzerland) to improve the air quality on their territories.
The pact follows up an agreement already reached in 2005, in which the Northern-Italian regions agreed to consult each other on effective ways to reduce air pollution, following EU directives in this field. Mercedes Bresso, president of the region of Piedmont, comments that “it took a long time to complete this pact” but this extensive discussion period has resulted in a set of concrete and far-reaching measures.
The pact includes the following measures:
  • the prohibition of the most polluting vehicles by 2010
  • compulsory particle filters on diesel vehicles
  • boosting the use of public transport, particularly the underground and (non-polluting) buses
The implementation of the pact will be kicked-off by a car-free day in the Italian regions on 25 February.
