Commission to award best European broadband projects – entries sought
21-02-2007

The European Commission is organising a conference on ‘Bridging the Broadband Gap: Benefits of broadband for rural areas and less developed regions’. Aim of the conference is to investigate how the strategic use of Information & Communication Technologies (ICTs) can support regional and local development, ease infrastructure and geographical handicaps, and make these areas more attractive to business and individuals. A call is open for interested parties to submit successful broadband projects to be showcased at the conference.
The Commission is inviting up to forty projects to be present at the Exhibition Area of the event to share their experiences with other conference participants, and therefore, it is inviting applications from public authorities that have undertaken projects to support rural and regional development through the opportunities provided by the use of broadband. Proposals should demonstrate how the projects are succeeding in bridging the broadband gap. Travel and subsistence costs for two persons per project will be covered by the Commission.
From the forty projects present at the conference, three will be awarded the title Best European Broadband Project 2007.
The deadline for submitting projects is 2 March 2007.
