Town twinning: "Europe for citizens" programme officially adopted 06-02-2007 The European Commission has officially adopted the new "Europe for citizens"
programme which aims to promote active European citizenship through different
actions, including town twinning.
With a total budget of EUR 215 millions, the programme is open to European
municipalities and cities. It will end on 31 December 2013.
A guide to the programme 2007-2013 has also been published. It includes the
actions funded under the programme, the priority themes, the eligibility
criteria as well as the budgets allocated to town twinning.
Town twinning is aimed at promoting direct exchanges between European
citizens and encouraging the organisation of conferences or seminars on subjects
of common interest to EU citizens. Its goal is also to contribute to
strengthening mutual knowledge and understanding between the citizens.
In the framework of town twinning activities, the Council of European
Municipalities and Regions (CEMR) is organising, from 10-12 May 2006, in Rhodes,
a conference of twinned towns. The Twinning for tomorrow's world conference will
bring together hundreds of representatives of European municipalities and
institutions to debate issues such as the "Europe for citizens" EU programme,
twinning and social inclusion, twinning and youth, the future of twinning.
