Sevilla 2007 gives renewed impetus to the Aalborg Commitments 28-03-2007 Over 1500 delegates from European local governments have committed to
immediately advance policies for local sustainable development. These policies,
which will be implemented within the framework of the Aalborg Commitments, are
an important step towards a sustainable Europe. The “The Spirit of Sevilla” is
the culmination of the Fifth European Conference on Sustainable Cities and
Towns, which was held in Sevilla from 21 to 24 March.
During the conference, local governments agreed to assess their progress
towards the sustainability targets by setting indicators, undertaking regular
monitoring reviews and making results available to citizens.
Engaging citizens and stakeholders is vital to ensure progress in local
sustainability. Across Europe, towns and cities will therefore take the Aalborg
Commitments to the streets. To inspire local governments, the conference
provided multiple examples of successful implementation of the Aalborg
Commitments.
Nevertheless, a sustainable Europe remains a key challenge for all local
governments and requires joint efforts. The delegates expressed the hope that
their work will inspire and motivate other towns and cities to sign up to the
Aalborg Commitments.
