Register now for Europan 9 – the urban design competition for Europe’s young architects and urban design professionals
17-04-2007

Europan is a European urban design competition that brings to the fore Europe’s young architecture and urban design professionals. It gives them the opportunity to publicise and develop their ideas. The theme of Europan 9 is ‘European urbanity – sustainable city and new public spaces’. Cities and developers have provided 73 sites which need innovative architectural and urban solutions to be transformed.
For each site, a short profile with maps and background information has been prepared. These are available on the Europan website. The sites have been divided into four thematic categories:
  • Extensions in question - Since a sustainable approach of the urban development implies a moderate consumption of the territory, how to efficiently develop potential urban extensions?
  • Networks on the move - Is there a new way to consider the urban transport infrastructure within the city, not only as a functional means, but also as a new starter to create intensity and urbanity?
  • Local mutations - What kind of urban project can be proposed to “build the city over the city” in obsolete areas as well as in living districts to transform them into multifunctional neighbourhoods?
  • Opportunities for public space - How to create new types of public spaces, not as artificial forms cut off from the social dynamics, but related to living spaces and profiting of the opportunities offered by the existing urban territory?
Europan 9 is open to any team of young urban and architectural design professionals (architects, urban planners, landscape designers, engineers). Teams may also include young professionals from other disciplines. All candidates must be under 40 years old on the closing date for submission of entries. The winners and runners-up receive a prize of 12,000 and 6,000 euros (including tax) respectively. Prize-winning entries will be publicised both nationally and throughout Europe by way of exhibitions, meetings and publications in a European catalogue of all the results.
The closing date for the on-line registration is 31 May. Entries must be submitted by 28 June.
