RECTIFICATION: Report did not express official view of European Parliament 03-05-2007 The EUKN Secretariat has reacted prematurely on the conclusions of the study
“Possibilities for Success of the Sustainable Communities Approach and its
Implementation” that was presented to and debated by the European Parliament
Committee on Regional Development (EP REGI Committee) on 2 May 2007. The EP has
notified the EUKN Secretariat of three inconsistencies in the news item
“European Parliament calls upon EUKN to strengthen Sustainable Cities Agenda”
which was published on 3 May 2007.
Firstly, the EP has not officially called upon EUKN to take on a bigger role
in strengthening the sustainable cities agenda.
Secondly, one of the conclusions of the study reads as follows: “The twelve
countries that have not yet become members of the EUKN (…) should be encouraged
to do so as it is a European project for the sharing of knowledge and good
practice in the field of urban policy and practice.” To date, the REGI committee
has issued no official statement on the study that has been presented on 2 May
2007. It is therefore incorrect to attribute this view to the Committee.
Lastly, the EP has not made any official statement on the future development
of the European Urban Knowledge Network. The news item might have suggested
this.
The inconsistencies were caused in part by our enthusiasm over the study’s
conclusions, and the importance that the EUKN Secretariat has always attributed
to the sustainable communities agenda. The Secretariat sincerely apologises for
the possible inconvenience caused by the news item.
