10 million euros to encourage the Intercultural Dialogue – call for tenders opened
07-06-2007

The European Union has for many years encouraged intercultural dialogue. However, according to the Commission, today there is a need for a deeper and more structured dialogue of cultures. The European Commission has opened a call for projects that encourage the intercultural dialogue. The Commission will fund up to ten transnational projects that improve intercultural exchange. The deadline for submitting proposals is 31 July 2007.
2008 will be the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue. The key goal of the Year is to strengthen respect for cultural diversity and the coexistence of different cultural identities and beliefs. In addition, the year aims to highlight the contribution of different cultures to the Member States' heritage and way of life and to recognise that culture and intercultural dialogue are essential for learning to live together in harmony.
Several developments lead to increased contacts between cultures, religions, ethnic groups and languages, amongst others:
  • the Enlargement of the European Union coupled with increasing mobility linked to the Common market
  • new and old migratory flows
  • new trade ties with the rest of the world
  • better education
  • globalisation in general
The intercultural dialogue can contribute to a number of strategic priorities of the European Union, such as:
  • respecting and promoting cultural diversity
  • favouring the European Union’s commitment to solidarity
  • social justice and reinforced cohesion
  • allowing the European Union to make its voice heard
  • realising new efficient partnership with neighbouring countries
