European employers embrace single market initiatives
09-07-2007

On 28 June 2007, the Employers' Group of the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) met to support efforts to relaunch the Single Market. The meeting was attended by representatives from the European Commission, BusinessEurope, EuroCommerce and the EESC. According to the employers, there are currently problems in which existing legislation and principles are applied. This stops citizens and enterprises from enjoying the benefits of the internal market.
As underlined by Mr Malosse, President of the EESC's Employers' Group, the meeting was designed to "put together concrete ideas about what we, as employers, are able to do in order to meet the challenge of relaunching the Single Market, as part of European-level discussions on the review of the Single Market. Employers were the pioneers of the Common Market: they fully intend to continue in this role".
In concrete terms, the Employers Group proposes a road map for the completion of the Single Market by the year 2020 involving:
  • A regulatory framework geared to free movement with a view to removing obstacles that hamper the smooth running of the Single Market. Most of European legislation should have a direct effect
  • New mechanisms and a European regulatory framework for businesses, in particular for SMEs
  • Support for European-wide projects in research, innovation and trans-European communication networks so that European businesses, wherever located in Europe, can benefit from a wider European market.
