New president for European Forum for Urban Safety 11-07-2007 The three hundred members of the European Forum for Urban Safety (EFUS).
elected a new board at their general assembly on Friday 6 July in Rome. EFUS is
a network specialised in questions of security and crime prevention. Juan
Alberto Belloch Julbe, mayor of Saragossa, was elected President of the Forum,
succeeding Freddy Thielemans, Brussels’ mayor and President since 2003.
The candidacy for Saragossa followed on from the international conference
“Security, Democracy and Cities”, which took place on 2-4 November, 2006 and
gave rise to the Saragossa Manifesto, adopted by the participant members and
which brings together the uniting principles of the EFUS.
Upon assuming office, President Belloch stated his intent to continue the
work started by the founder of the association, Gilbert Bonnemaison, and
continued by the successive Presidents. He notably declared his intention to
promote local policies and the role of local elected officials in crime
prevention actions at a European level. He particularly emphasised the
importance of harmonising respect for freedom and democracy with the needs of
security, whilst respecting the founding principles of the EFUS and the
approaches of the members.
The mayors of the cities of Budapest (Hungary), Loures (Portugal), Modena
(Italy) and Roubaix (France) have been elected Vice Presidents of the EFUS.
