European Commission publishes communication on regional competitiveness and innovation 21-08-2007 The European Commission (EC) has published a communication outlining the
European financial instruments available to regions to strengthen the knowledge
economy. The Communication shows the synergies between the funding the European
research, innovation and cohesion policies. The publication calls on national,
regional and local authorities to use the funding schemes more and more
efficiently.
The Communication aims to enhance the regional contribution to the
realisation of the goals of the Lisbon Agenda, which aims to make Europe the
most competitive knowledge economy in the world by 2010. Research and innovation
are crucial in this respect. According to the European Commission, research and
innovation are most effectively addressed at the regional level, as proximity
fosters partnerships between actors in both public and private partnerships
