EU highlights role of families in curbing demographic change and building social cohesion
15-08-2007

As a result of demographic change, family-friendliness is becoming an increasingly important element of European Union policies. The compatibility of family and career will play an important role in Europe’s future economic and social development. In an effort to meet these challenges, the EU heads of state and government, at the European Summit of 8 and 9 March 2007, decided to establish a European Alliance for Families.
The Alliance hopes to create impulses for more family-friendly policies through exchanges of ideas and experience in the various Member States and to foster cooperation and fruitful learning from each other in the European Union.
By achieving these objectives, the European Alliance for Families can make a substantial contribution towards implementing the Lisbon strategy for economic growth and employment, for sustainable population development, for stronger social cohesion and for the implementation of the road map for gender equality.
On 30 May 2007, the employment and social ministers of the EU Member States decided on further steps for the European Alliance for Families. An important element of these measures is the creation of a web portal to foster reciprocal exchanges and to provide information to the general public.
The portal will offer links to detailed, country-specific information on the activities of the individual Member States of the European Union in the area of family policy.
It will also present an overview of important studies on the subject of family policy and advertise current events on relevant topics.
