This research focuses on the development of new towns during socialism in the East Central European countries and their changing characters in the post-socialist transition. Author concentrates on three main issues:

According to the author, opposite to the expectations many of the new towns in East Central Europe successfully coped with the difficulties brought about by the political and economic transition of the 1990s. The depth of economic and social crisis of new towns differs by country to country, and by region to region, and very much depends on the national and local policy. As a consequence of the re-establishment of market economy the local society of new towns has also gone through substantial changes. As a consequence, the social structure of these towns now very much resembles the society of organically grown cities.
