Creative Regions Network
Introduction
How to develop creative industries in cities and regions?
Description
The network aims to address trends and issues around the development of the creative and cultural industries at the regional level, fostering a multi-disciplinary debate among researchers, practitioners and policy makers in the field.
Participants
The network is opened to academics, practitioners and policy makers working on creative industries, cities and regions worldwide.
Network lead
The network is sponsored by the Regional Studies Association and has been initiated by Dr Roberta Comunian from the School Geography of the University of Southampton, Dr Caroline Chapain from the Centre for Urban and Regional Studies of the University of Birmingham and Nick Clifton from the Centre for Advanced Studies, Cardiff University.
Objectives
The network tries to gather a solid knowledge-base around the way creative industries develop in cities and regions and move this knowledge-base forward. Various disciplines have been looking at the way these industries operate generally or in particular places but a common theoretical framework seems lacking. While regional studies and geographic disciplines offer a wide contribution to the debate, major developments come also from social studies, business and management studies, cultural and media studies and economics. To do so the network is collecting evidence and information on these topics among these disciplines and has organised seminars involving academics and practitioners from these fields to discuss the following questions:
  • How to study the relationship between creative industries and city-regions.
  • What are the methodologies which address the way creative industries produce and interact with their markets?
  • What is the role of place at various levels (city, neighbourhood, regions) in fostering creativity and creative production?
  • What is the importance of public support policies and frameworks in developing the creative industries sector?
  • Does fostering creative industries mean enabling regional growth?
