Innovative City® Programme
Introduction
The Innovative City® Programme aims to produce urban innovations by combining the existing know-how and research resources of the City of Helsinki and Helsinki University of Technology and therewith to increase the international attractiveness and competitiveness of the capital region.
Description

Background and Goals
The City of Helsinki and Helsinki University of Technology launched a joint development programme called Innovative City® 2001. The goal of the Programme is to increase the global competitiveness of the Helsinki Region by activating higher education based creativity and innovativeness in collaboration between the partners.
Options for the collaboration include various technological areas, such as:
  • Building
  • Traffic
  • Healthcare and social sector
  • Urban planning
  • Architecture
  • Information technology
  • Energy
  • Waste disposal
  • Environmental protection
  • Training
Operation Model
Innovative City® Programme forms a coordinated unformal network, which brings together specialists with different backgrounds. Participation in the network is easy and flexible.
Collaboration covers R&D projects, seminars, workshops, etc. The programme is also searching for entirely new forms of cooperation.
Results
Until the end of 2005 there has been a total of 16 Innovative City® R&D projects launched. Those joint projects have been financed with over 5.2 million euros. Main financers are National Technology Agency (TEKES), ministries, private companies and the European Union (EU).
Organisation
The programme is managed by an organisation consisting of the Board, the Steering Group, a Project Manager and a Project Assistant.
The programme was launched 2001 and will be running until 2010.

EU involvement
3 of the 16 projects are partially financed by the EU.
