The need for a new European Urban Research Agenda
Introduction
Cities as engines of economic development face their own challenges: how can cities find ways to create jobs and maintain economic viable; to create a sustainable environment and to meet the challenges of social safety and cohesion?
Description
The EU's framework programmes for research and technological development are the Commission's main instrument for funding European research. Although the current 6th Framework Programme (FP6) will still run until 2006, debates have already started on the budget, structure and priorities of FP7.
Conclusions
The conclusions of the SUPER project are that:
  • Urban agglomerations and regions are focal points of economic strengths and weaknesses in Europe with regard to urban sprawl, economic development, labour market, social conflicts, environmental concerns or traffic problems;
  • cities are driving forces for European economic development and its competitiveness in a global context;
  • there is a strong need for an integrated urban research agenda focussed on sustainable planning, economic growth and land-use, combining existing European urban policies and the Lisbon objectives.
