Economic opportunities in six Dutch regions
Introduction
The policy document ‘Peaks in the Delta' describes the economic agenda of the government for six regions in the Netherlands. With this regional economic agenda, the government wants to contribute to its goal of creating a competitive and dynamic Dutch economy.
Description
Which priorities do the six economically related regions in the Netherlands share and how can these contribute to an efficient national economic agenda?
The growing power of the Dutch economy is faltering. One important reason for this is the global economic slump. In addition, more and more structural shortcomings of the Dutch economy keep coming to light. This policy document describes the government’s regional economic agenda for six Dutch regions. They are: the East, the South West, the South East and the North Netherlands and the northern and southern part of the Randstad conurbation. The government sees this agenda as a way of helping to make the Dutch economy competitive and dynamic. This agenda does not stand on its own: it is closely connected with initiatives and policy intentions in other areas.
Conclusions
The national choices as set out in this memorandum make an important contribution to the improvement of the business climate and the room for enterprise, in the form of a joint governmental impetus. The regional economic agenda will increase policy efficacy by homing in on stumbling blocks through the dedicated use of people and means for shared priorities of national government, municipalities, provinces and businesses. The cabinet has the following policy targets:
  • The government assigns key economic areas in the Main Spatial Structure. These key economic areas are characterised by the presence of employment-boosting aspects, such as universities and important relationships with the mainports.
  • To establish cohesion and synergy of policy, parties must develop a shared economic philosophy with regard to stumbling blocks and opportunities within a region.
  • The government wants to focus on national economic priorities in collaboration with other administrative bodies and businesses. These are the peaks in the delta that are the foundation on which our international competitive power should be based.
  • Initially, local and provincial authorities need to use economic opportunities (peaks) within their own regions, but the government is responsible for guaranteeing a basic level of quality.
