B&B accommodation generates new business - Bari, IT
Introduction
To attract a wider range of visitors, particularly young people, the city of Bari has allocated funds to families to refurbish and maintain bed and breakfast (B&B) accommodation.
Problem
Bari's historical centre is highly attractive for tourists. However, its accommodation is limited mainly to traditional hotels. These are often too expensive for tourists with a modest budget, such as young people.
Description
To promote Bari’s tourism sector, the local authorities improved the availability of B&B accommodation in the city. The project trained twenty families to start and run their own B&Bs, which can sleep two to four visitors. They could claim up to 75% of their costs. The families have created an association to share the burdens of B&Bs implementation and management. This network will also make it easier for the families to share best practice.
Results
The project provided the families running the B&Bs with an extra income and attracted a new group of tourists to Bari. In this way, the local economy of Bari was given a welcome boost.
EU involvement
The B&B project was partially financed by the URBAN I programme of the European Commission.
