Cities, regions and competitiveness: second report from the working group of government departments
Introduction
Examines how to strengthen the UK's growth capacity in future global upturns, reviewing evidence from competitor countries to demonstrate how stronger regional cities in England could enable higher growth.
Description
Presents the second report from the Working Group of Government Departments, comprising the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, the main economic departments, the Core Cities and the regional development agencies. Examines how to strengthen the UK's growth capacity in future global upturns. Reviews evidence from competitor countries to demonstrate how stronger regional cities in England could enable higher growth. Considers the pivotal role of cities in advanced economies. Suggests that competitive cities will create prosperous regions. Outlines the key characteristics of competitive cities. Recommends initiatives in a series of key areas: innovation and technology transfer; education and skills; investment in high productivity functions; spatial planning; strategic transport connections; the roles of sport and culture; and the need to measure competitiveness.
