NLstreets promotes a more diverse shopping experience in cities
Introduction
According to the Dutch organisation NLstreets, shopping streets in The Netherlands are becoming increasingly monotonous and boring. As small artisanal entrepreneurs are forced to give way to large-scale franchises, shopping streets are losing their authentic identity. NLStreets has therefore set up several initiatives to promote unique shopping locations, support independent entrepreneurs and aid municipalities aiming to diversify or revitalise shopping areas in their cities.
Problem
Shopping streets in Dutch city centres are increasingly dominated by large-scale franchises. NLstreets aims to promote a more diverse offer of independent and artisinal shops in Dutch cities.
Description
In order to promote a more diverse, authentic and artisanal shopping experience in Dutch city centres, NLStreets has set up several initiatives:
  • A website containing information for consumers, entrepreneurs and civil servants. Twenty cities, sixty-five shopping streets and more than a thousand entrepreneurs have been linked to NLstreets. The website is available in both Dutch and English;
  • Active support for independent entrepreneurs. NLstreets is not only an advertising platform, it also supports the interests of its members;
  • Active support for municipalities that wish to revitalise shopping areas in their cities;
  • The NLstreets award which is annually given to the nicest shopping street of The Netherlands.
