Amsterdam: Peristylium helps young people to find work
Introduction
The A10 circular road runs past the Wiltzanghlaan in the Bos and Lommer area of the city. There are houses, jobs and a school in the area. The open space containing the columns that support the A10 is an uninviting place and in the Peristylium project, schoolchildren are working to improve this open space.
Problem
Pupils from the ROC school are being prepared for the labour market through practical work experience. They are also actively contributing to an attractive and safe environment, in the form of a peristylium, an inner garden surrounded by a gallery of columns.
Description
The Peristylium project fits in with the new methodology that has been developed to keep children who are in danger of leaving school early, without qualifications, in the educational system. Pupils from the ROC made suggestions for improving the safety of the area and giving it a more attractive aspect, as part of their vocational training. The pupils are involved with the entire course of the project, including design, informing local people about the project, and implementation.
Approach
The spearheads within the Amsterdam programme document are:
  • Improving the physical business environment.
  • Stimulating entrepreneurship.
  • Improving the job market.
  • Socio-economic activation.
  • Quality of life and social cohesion.
Results
Through the project, young people come into contact with potential employers. These local businesses, for their part, learn that providing work experience is important to prepare young people for work. Good follow-up procedures by the work experience supervisor from the ROC are being used to stimulate businesses to continue to make work experience places available, which will ultimately also be of benefit to themselves.
EU involvement
URBAN II is an initiative of the European Commission. The aim is to support innovative projects in the field of urban regeneration in disadvantaged neighbourhoods. The URBAN II projects will set an example for national urban policy. In the Netherlands, areas in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and Heerlen have been allocated for the period 2000-2006. In Amsterdam the URBAN II programme is being carried out in eight neighbourhoods from four city districts (West binnen de Ring), with a total of 63,000 inhabitants.
Financing
