Increasing skills and workforce development in London
Introduction
The London Action Centred Business Intervention Networks project provides an opportunity for employers in the Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism (HLTT) sector to be actively engaged in the design, delivery and evaluation of publicly-funded training programmes.
Problem
The area of publicly-funded training and learning programmes is often confusing for employers. There are many different programmes across London to choose from and not all of these are available in each of the five London regions. In addition, it often remains unclear what the employee will learn or do better as a result.
Description
In the first phase of the project, a network of employers in the HLTT sector was established in each of the five London regions (East, West, North, South and Central).
In the second phase of the project (April 2006-March 2008), the employers’networks can
  • provide input into the publicly-funded skills agenda;
  • highlight training areas they feel need improvement or change.
With the employers’ feedback and active involvement, London can offer  training programmes that are more demand-driven. This enables the employers to have the right number of people with the right skills and qualifications at the right time.
Approach
The employers’ networks will be given the opportunity to shape the range  of learning provision available in the future through:
  • their active engagement in the design, delivery and evaluation of innovative learning programmes;
  • their input on qualifications and skills gaps and how these can be best met across London.
Additionally, People 1st will identify and collect information for distribution via a web-based tool, which provides an overview of all London-funded training programmes aimed at the further development of the HLTT sector.
Results
This project is still being implemented: the results of the project evaluation will be available from March 2008.
