Rotterdam-South Explorer: arts and culture tackle problematic urban issues
Introduction
Rotterdam-South is an area which is known for its raw reputation and the problematic urban issues that affect it. However, it is also known as a place where things are happening, where cultures mix and as a nice place to live and work for young international talent. Oud-Charlois is a neighbourhood which plays a unique role in Rotterdam-South. Its picturesque buildings, the colourful streets, smalls shops, the industrial dynamic and a very mixed population have made the area a cultural hotspot for young artists to set home-base for many years. Four cultural entrepreneurs have now started a special initiative to invite more people to the area.
Problem
How to change the image of Rotterdam-South and attract more visitors to the area?
Description
On the last Sunday of every month from 13:00 to 17:00 many creative shops, project spaces and galleries in Old-Charlois are open to the public. Visitors can look at art, crafts, go shopping, discover the history of the area and enjoy a walk around the neighbourhood. A special booklet was prepared for the 'Rotterdam-South Explorer' project which gives an overview of all the shops, galleries and workspaces around Old-Charlois. A detailed map of the area depicting the location of all the places listed in the booklet is also available on the project website.
Results
In 2008, two 'South Explorer' Sundays have already been organised. Six are still to follow.
Financing
The project was set up by local cultural entrepreneurs. It is supported by the 'Pact op Zuid' programme of the City of Rotterdam.
